Iranian Diaspora Stages 2-day Hunger Strike Before BC Legislature

Amid escalating violence against protesters in Iran, some Iranian activists make a desperate call for action.

A couple activists have been protesting at the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia with a 2-day hunger strike, demanding more action from the Canadian government against the Iranian regime brutally repressing protesters. They have also set up a mock gallows and noose display to denounce the regime’s execution of protesters.

While the strikers do not make specific demands, they deplore the fact that trade is still possible with Iran, and indeed it would seem all that Canadian sanctions have achieved so far is whittling down its volume by insignificant amounts.

In the meantime, the protesters worry the escalating violence could dwarf that of Bloody November in 2019, in which an estimated 1500 people were killed by the regime.

It is worth noting that foreign affairs are of federal jurisdiction, therefore there is little the provincial government can do about it, but Parliament would be an impractical 4000km walk away. Maybe our newest Premier could mention it next time he goes begging Ottawa for health care money, though.

Incidentally, I met another isolated protester at the Legislature. This one sits on these stairs every Friday to denounce climate inaction, hoping to secure a better future for his son. I wish him luck in his endeavour.
